CREW Chicago DEI Training

In 2020, Chicago CREW added the Equity and Inclusion Committee to its roster of committees. The CREW Chicago E&I Committee was created with the understanding that advancing the power and success of women in commercial real estate must include advancing the power and success of women in underrepresented groups by working to overcome the institutional biases and racism within the commercial real estate industry.  The E&I Committee is focusing on programming, recruitment and retention, mentoring and sponsorship, internal training, industry assessment and community outreach.

As part of the E&I Committee’s programming, on November 9th, CREW held its first of two virtual DEI training sessions.  The Anti-Defamation League’s expert trainers Dawnn Pirani Brumfield and Sean McGill facilitated the training. The focus of the training was understanding implicit bias and focusing on skills to confront biases and bias-based behavior.

The session focused on diversity issues that exist in the workplace, how to support a diverse and inclusive workplace, and integrating inclusion and equity into everyday life.  It was an open, in-depth discussion of the participants’ personal experiences with bias-based behavior, actions taken in response to bias-based behavior, and new tools to confront bias-based actions in the future. The facilitators shared their own experiences and provided participants with ideas on how to become catalysts for change in the workplace.  The participants walked away with a broader perspective and new tools to utilize in the ongoing journey to a more inclusive workplace.

The next training is scheduled for November 18th, 2021 and is open for all CREW members.
